In the past two decades, a considerable progress has been made in the development of biodegradable polymeric materials mainly in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications due to their versatility, biocompatibility and biodegradability properties. The present review article focuses on use of biodegradable polymers in various therapeutic areas like orthopedic and contraceptive device, surgical suture, implants, depot parenteral injection, etc. Biodegradable polymer also contributes a significant in development of drug-eluting stents (DES) for obstructive coronary artery disease like angioplasty. Biodegradable synthetic polymers have potential applications in orthopedic device fixation due to their properties which gives definite impact on the bone healing, formation, regeneration or substitution for human body. The current review also emphasize various area like chemistry of polymer synthesis, factors affecting the biodegradation, method for production of biodegradable polymer based formulation, application of biodegradable polymer in dental implants, nasal drug delivery, contraceptive device, immunology, gene, transdermal, nasal, ophthalmic and veterinary application as well as sterilization of biodegradable based formulation and regulatory consideration for product filing to regulated market. %U https://ojs.abo.fi/ojs/index.php/jefc/article/view/241 %J Journal of Excipients and Food Chemicals %0 Journal Article %P 126-157%V 4 %N 4 %@ 21502668 %8 2013-12-26
